I am excited to share with you my recent adventure in the beautiful province of Yunnan, China. Yunnan is a land of diverse cultures, stunning landscapes, and rich history. During my 6-day 5-night self-guided tour, I had the opportunity to explore the region's most famous attractions and hidden gems. In this article, I will share my personal travel itinerary, tips, and insights to help you plan your own unforgettable Yunnan trip.
Day 1: Arrival in Kunming
Upon arrival at the Kunming Changshui International Airport, I took a taxi to my hotel in the city center. I highly recommend booking a hotel near the city center to save time and money on transportation. After checking in and freshening up, I set out to explore the city.
Kunming, also known as the Spring City due to its year-round pleasant climate, offers a wealth of attractions. I started my exploration with a visit to the翠湖公园 (Cuihu Park), a beautiful urban park famous for its vibrant greenery and tranquil lakes. Next, I visited the 云南省博物馆 (Yunnan Provincial Museum), where I learned about the rich history and culture of Yunnan. In the evening, I enjoyed a delicious local dinner at a nearby restaurant before heading back to my hotel for a well-deserved rest.
Day 2: Kunming to Dali
After breakfast at the hotel, I took a high-speed train from Kunming to Dali, a picturesque town nestled along the banks of Erhai Lake. The train ride took approximately 2 hours. Upon arrival in Dali, I checked into my hotel and spent the afternoon exploring the town.
Dali is known for its well-preserved ancient architecture and vibrant cultural scene. I started my exploration with a visit to the 大理古城 (Dali Ancient City), where I strolled along the cobblestone streets and admired the traditional Bai architecture. I then visited the 三塔寺 (Three Pagodas), an iconic Buddhist temple complex dating back to the 9th century. In the evening, I enjoyed a delicious meal of local specialties at a nearby restaurant before heading back to my hotel for the night.
Day 3: Dali to Lijiang
After breakfast at the hotel, I hired a taxi to take me to Lijiang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its well-preserved ancient town and rich cultural heritage. The drive took approximately 3 hours. Upon arrival in Lijiang, I checked into my hotel and spent the afternoon exploring the town.
Lijiang is home to the 丽江古城 (Lijiang Ancient City), a stunningly preserved old town with a unique blend of Naxi and Chinese architecture. I spent the afternoon exploring the narrow streets, visiting local shops, and admiring the beautiful scenery. In the evening, I had the opportunity to watch a traditional Naxi music and dance performance before heading back to my hotel for the night.
Day 4: Lijiang to Shangri-La
After breakfast at the hotel, I took a bus from Lijiang to Shangri-La, a picturesque town located at an altitude of 3,200 meters above sea level. The drive took approximately 4 hours. Upon arrival in Shangri-La, I checked into my hotel and spent the afternoon exploring the town.
Shangri-La is known for its stunning natural beauty and unique Tibetan culture. I started my exploration with a visit to the 松赞林寺 (Songzanlin Monastery), the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. I then visited the 虎跳峡 (Tiger Leaping Gorge), one of the deepest and most impressive gorges in China. In the evening, I enjoyed a delicious local meal at a nearby restaurant before heading back to my hotel for the night.
Day 5: Shangri-La to丽江
After breakfast at the hotel, I took a bus from Shangri-La back to Lijiang. The drive took approximately 3 hours. Upon arrival in Lijiang, I spent the afternoon exploring the town and doing some last-minute shopping.
In the evening, I had the opportunity to attend a traditional Naxi dinner party, where I enjoyed a delicious meal and learned about Naxi culture and customs. After the dinner party, I headed back to my hotel in Lijiang for the night.
