I have just returned from an incredible winter self-guided tour of Yunnan, a province located in China's southwest corner. Yunnan is known for its stunning natural beauty, diverse cultures, and rich history. Despite the chilly temperatures, I was able to experience the province's unique charm and warmth during my seven-day trip.
Day 1: Arrival in Kunming
I started my journey in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province. Upon arrival, I checked into a cozy hostel located in the city center. I spent the afternoon exploring the nearby翠湖公园 (Cuihu Park), where I admired the vibrant plum blossoms and local residents practicing their morning exercises.
In the evening, I had the opportunity to try some of Yunnan's famous dishes at a local restaurant. I ordered 过桥米线 (Guoqiao Rice Noodles), a popular dish originating from Yunnan, and 云南饵块 (Yunnan Fish-Scented Tofu), which was absolutely delicious.
Day 2: Kunming to Dali
On day two, I took a morning train to Dali, a picturesque town located along the banks of Erhai Lake. Upon arrival, I checked into a charming guesthouse nestled in the old town.
I spent the afternoon exploring the ancient city walls, which were built over 1,300 years ago. I also visited the 三塔寺 (Three Pagodas), a Buddhist temple complex dating back to the 9th century. The sunset over Erhai Lake was simply breathtaking.
Day 3: Dali to Lijiang
On day three, I took a morning bus to Lijiang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its well-preserved ancient city. I checked into a traditional courtyard hotel in the heart of the old town.
In the afternoon, I strolled along the cobblestone streets of Lijiang, taking in the beautiful architecture and the unique waterwheels that can be found throughout the city. I also visited the 黑龙潭公园 (Black Dragon Pool Park), where I admired the peaceful surroundings and the stunning view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Day 4: Lijiang
On day four, I decided to take a day trip to the famous 虎跳峡 (Tiger Leaping Gorge). The gorge is one of the deepest in the world and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the raging Yangtze River. The hike was challenging, but the scenery was well worth the effort.
In the evening, I returned to Lijiang and treated myself to a delicious hotpot dinner at a local restaurant. The combination of spicy and numbing flavors was an absolute delight.
Day 5: Lijiang to Shangri-La
On day five, I took a morning bus to Shangri-La, a town located at an altitude of 3,200 meters above sea level. The journey was scenic, with snow-capped mountains and pristine lakes dotting the landscape.
Upon arrival, I checked into a cozy guesthouse and spent the afternoon exploring the 松赞林寺 (Songzanlin Monastery), a magnificent Buddhist monastery that is the largest of its kind in Yunnan. The sunset over the monastery was a sight to behold.
Day 6: Shangri-La
On day six, I decided to visit 梅里雪山 (Meili Snow Mountain), a mountain range located near Shangri-La that is sacred to both Tibetan Buddhists and local Bai people. The mountain range is home to several glaciers and snow-capped peaks, including the famous Kawagebo, the highest peak in the range.
The hike to the mountain was challenging, but the views were simply stunning. I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the elusive Meili Snow Mountain Rainbow, a rare weather phenomenon that occurs when the sun's rays hit the mountain at a specific angle.
Day 7: Departure from Shangri-La
On day seven, I took a morning flight back to Kunming, where I spent the afternoon shopping for souvenirs and gifts at the 云南民族村 (Yunnan Ethnic Village) before catching my flight back home.
